Comic Book Wednesday!

It’s here again,

That day once a week where it feels like Christmas! jut a little nerdier!

There’s some great ones this week:

  • Action Comics #6
  • Animal Man #6
  • Avengers: X-Sanction #3 (of 4)
  • Fatale #2
  • Infestation 2: Transformers #1 (of 2)
  • Izombie #22
  • Swamp Thing #6
  • Sweet Tooth #30 (For my pretty lady)
  • The Defenders #3
  • The Punisher #8
  • Uncanny X-Men #6

What I’m excited most for:

It’s a tough call, I love Animal Man and good ol’ Swampy. Fatale is beautiful and I dig the supernatural noir genre it presents. But, I’d have to go with:

The Defenders #3:

Fraction is a weird writer, in the best way possible. I really didn’t think I’d enjoy a team consisting of Doc Strange, Immortal Iron Fist, Red She-Hulk, Silver Surfer and fuckin’ Namor, but, I do. I really do. This book treads a fine line between action and satire. It never takes itself to seriously, which makes for a high energy cant-put-it-down-nothing-else-in-the-world-matters read! Pick up the first issue and give it a shot. If you don’t, well….. you don’t. But seriously, it’s good.

Weekly pick up: January 25, 2011

Alright,

Coffee was brewed, reading light was switched on, Recliner was… reclined, and I read through my pile of weekly’s. Here are my thoughts:

All-Star Western #5:

Excellent job by the creative team of this western comic. We got to see Jonah Hex in his element: Impossible odds, violent foes, and inescapable situations. I particularly enjoyed the splash panel of Hex against a giant bat, with the caption “Dammit! Ah hate Gotham.” (Wooo! Batman! Represent!). The companion piece “The Barbary Ghost: Part 2″ was fun. Nothing too spectacular, straight forward revenge plot. I had a lot of fun reading it none the less.

Angel & Faith #5:

Awesome! It’s great to see a Giles-centric storyline. I am a huge fan of Giles (the only Buffyverse character I like more is Wesley), so it’s great to see Chris Gage shed some more light on his time training to be a Watcher (Pre-Ripper! I’m sensing more backstory!). Also the intro of a character from Faith’s past will lead to some interesting exposition in the next few issues.

Aquaman #5:

Meh, it was ok. I think it’s gonna lead somewhere neat, but none of the writing in this issue really amazed me. The art, however, was impeccable as per usual.

Justice League #5:

Also ok, lots of cornball dialogue. Batman was bad-ass, and I’m excited to see the show down between the League and Darkseid.

Justice League Dark #5: This is one of my favorites of the new 52. Peter Milligan is well versed in a lot of these people (form his Vertigo days) and handles their characterization very well. I loved Constantines response to Deadmans confrontation: “Oh Bollocks, a bloody hero.” Plus the first page which includes much of the 52′s “Dark” line was great!

Superman #5:

This book is a shining example of how to write a superhero book. So much dialogue and fast paced action. I now know why Superman is so popular. Great ending too.

TMNT #6:

They introduced MOUSERS!!! WOOOO!! It was fun, I’m digging TMNT. Makes me feel like a kid again.

The Flash #5:

Holy fuck! Sooooo good! We got teasers to the Rogues, a new villain; Mob Rule, and found out Flash’s use of the speed force is tearing apart the very fabric time! Whats next for our scarlet speedster!?

Infestation 2 #1:

I didn’t read the first Infestation event, so I’m a little confused, but so far it’s a fun read about an invasion of monster prisoners from another dimension. I really don’t enjoy the wise cracking vamp by the name of Bools but the leader of the CVO unit (some sort of good guy supernatural task force) is pretty awesome, I believe his name is Cross. I’m mainly excited to see the crossovers into the Transformers and TMNT universe (how awesome is that!?).

Bomb Queen #1 and #2:

This book is silly, vulgar, mad cap fun. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. It pushes the envelope without getting all Ennis-y (Garth Ennis, the man behind Preacher and the Boys.) Which I like since I, for some reason, can’t stomach his level of gratuitous violence (strange considering most of my interests). It’s definitely worth the read.

My pick of the week:

Angel and Faith #5:

No matter how great the rest of this weeks books are, you can’t fucking touch a story about Giles. No way.

Well that’s it… I feel kinda bad about the Ennis comment. I’m not saying he’s bad, in fact he’s quite the opposite! Just not for me I guess. If you get the chance, read some Preacher. If you can get past the hyper violence and the very detailed gore, it’s a great story.

That’s all for now!

Amaranthine Project

Hello!

I come before you today to speak about my exceptionally talented cousin Stephan McGowan.

Stephan is an artist who is currently living in Montreal, making a living by producing independent art! For the past few years, her and her friend have been working on a comic which they hope to release in April of 2013.

She posted a link to the site detailing the comic on my Facebook page so I thought I’d relay the message via my blog.

This book is being funded by the donations of wonderful people who want to support independent art. I urge you to check out the following links and see what you think. If this sounds like something you’d be interested in reading one day maybe toss some cash their way! (it would be super swell of you.) I’m also going to be posting links to my Cousins general art website also, so you can see what a kick ass artist she is!

I believe she will also have a booth at this years Comic Expo, I’ll post more details when I know more.

Thanks for reading!

Forgot one….

Well goddammit.

In my haste of geeking out on my first pull list blog, I forgot a comic from the “A” section.

Animal Man:

I haven’t read any of the original “Animal Man” series (much to the dismay of my good bud Robbie G.) but since Jeff Lemire’s writing the reboot I thought it would be in my best interest to check it out. Now I’m not the big Lemire nut in this house hold. My girlfriend actually is. She started collecting Sweet Tooth in Singles around the time issue #7 came out and was completely hooked. Last year she even got the opportunity to meet Lemire and request a commission piece, which made her fucking month, he is a super friendly dude. Awkward but nice. Now I haven’t to this day read a single issue of Sweet Tooth but I’m told it’s fantastical. I got into Mr. Lemire during the Flashpoint event. He was heading one of the mini series involved called “Flashpoint: Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown”. It sounded stupid, but, I had to give it a shot (I mean I read The Canterbury Cricket Flashpoint so it made sense to continue  on with silly sounding comics). IT BLEW MY MIND! It was a great adventure book. The noble monster Frankenstein and his elite team of Creature Commandos traversing into towns with unknown fiends and monsters, uncovering deep dark secrets. How could one resist? reading it made me feel as giddey as I did as a little boy watching Indiana Jones or Mighty Max!

From this point I was ready to get into Lemire. I started following his new 52 (Animal Man & Frankenstein agent of S.H.A.D.E.). While Frank is super fun, the highlight of the two is most definitely Animal Man. It takes place after the original series with a domesticated Buddy (Animal Man) his wife Ellen, and their two kids Cliff and Maxine. Things quickly take a dark and adventurous turn when Buddy discovers Maxine has similar powers to his own! The two of them must do battle against the entity known as the rot, the fate of their family and quite possibly the world depends on it. Holy Crap! It’s too good! The book is also visually stunning and strangely horrific, Travel Foreman has this very angular sketch art that fits in perfectly with the series dark horror/action tone, when Buddy transforms into his animal forms it’s not pretty. This style showcases the visually disgusting side of Buddy’s powers and I, for one, think it’s grand.

Ugh. Nasty

I look forward to this book every month. If you get the chance pick up #1 and see what you think. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

MERRY HAPPY!!

Today is Tuesday and you know what that means?

COMIC BOOK WEDNESDAY TOMORROW!

it’s just a day away! oh splendid joy! Can’t wait to get my greedy, clammy (ew) hands on some monthly’s!

Here’s what I’m picking up:

  • All-Star Western #5
  • Angel & Faith #5
  • Aquaman #5
  • Justice League #5
  • Justice League Dark #5
  • Superman #5
  • TMNT #6
  • The Flash #5

I’m most excited for TMNT. Mr. Eastman has done a great job re-tooling the origin of our favorite Reptiles with a ‘tude. He provides the series with a tone reminiscent of the 80′s comic incarnation. I’m excited to see what will happen next, and I can’t wait for the Shredders debut.

Plus Old Hob is a fucking bad-ass as the first villain in this new series.

"Such a Bad-ass"

This week looks all around amazing, Hopefully we’ll finally get to see the fully formed Justice League, I’ve been waiting five goddamn months! Give me my pay off!!

Later on this week I’ll be posting my thoughts on this weeks pile. Oh and Imma take the plunge and get the first two issues of the new Bomb Queen!

WoOOO!! Comics!

Comic Pull List Part 1: Action-Batman

Ok, so to start I will publish my monthly comic pull list. These aren’t necessarily all of the comics I follow but they are the ones I consistently pick up. If it’s a light week I like to pick up some number ones, give some of the other guys a shot. I’m thinking my next casual pick up will be Bomb Queen. I’m on the fence ’cause it does look a little stupid, however, I like the premise and there’s boobies, BOOBIES!!

(Revision: Ok so in writing this I’ve realized that It’s going to be waaaaaayyyy tooooooo looooonnggg so I will publish it in shorter fast paced entries!!)

Anyways…

Here is my list and a bit of a rundown as to why I’m following them:

Action Comics:

I’ve never been a fan of Superman, at all. In fact, up until maybe 3 years ago I would avoid him like the plague. He’s a big stupid All-American boy scout, who is nearly invincible. How do you connect with a character like that? In short, fuck him. Now two or three years ago I found an online list of the top 25 Batman story arcs, on this list was JLA: Tower of Babylon. I was hesitant as this was my first outing to the DC universe that wasn’t strictly Batmancentric and I’ve gotta admit, Superman shone through! I realized then that Superman, if well written, can be just as interesting and dynamic a character as the Dark Knight.

So when DC started it’s “New 52″ and I found out that the very talented Grant Morrison was on board I figured there would be no better time to get into the Man of Steel!

All-Star Western:

Never read Jonah Hex before but he’s a heavily scarred lone gun for hire in 1800′s era Gotham…’Nuff said

Angel and Faith:

I love Buffy. I loved the Season 8 comic book. So when I found out Season 9 was being split into 2 books I was fucking stoked! Double the Buffster! Wooo! Though I have never much liked Faith, a book with Angel as the main character!? sign me the fuck up! The writing by Chris Gage is spot on Whedon inspired goodness, and the way Rebekah Isaacs captures the likenesses of every character makes me all happy and tingley inside.

Aquaman:

I follow this because I like Geoff Johns and the art is very sharp. It’s a fun book although I wish there was a bit more dialogue. Johns accomplishes in 4 issues what others could do in 1. I find he’s less doing a comic and more doing a movie story board. My suggestion for this book, collect several issues and read them all in one shot, It’ll take you like 15 minutes in total.

Batman:

Batman is, hands down, my favorite hero. He’s just too cool for school! I wasn’t following any bat titles in monthly’s until my buddy, Robbie G, loaned me the last arc of Detective Comics before the reboot, It was written by a man by the name of Scott Snyder. This man rocks my socks. I loved that arc and heard he was taking over Batman when the new 52 happened, along with artist Greg Capullo (Best known for Spawn and the album art for Korn’s “Follow the Leader”). I was over the goddamn moon!

Snyder and Capullo have not disappointed. There first arc, which deals with an old and dangerous secret society called the Court of Owls, Is amazing. Snyder knows his characters and is able to provide well flushed out personalities for everyone of them. On top of that his pacing and plotting is above and beyond a lot of whats currently out there. I’m willing to bet in a few years Snyder’s going to be a top tier hot shot. I, for one, am excited to watch his career flourish.

So thus concludes the first installment of my pull-list. There will be many more along with some reviews so stay tuned!

Comic-Cadaver Light!

Hello!

This right here…this is my first attempt at writing a blog. It has been a long time since I’ve wrote anything about anything (twitter aside) so sorry if it’s a big ass pile of suck for the first…while. I think the main focus of this blog will be on my comic collecting, with some interjection from my other hobbies (Toys, T.V., Music, Movies etc.). I warn you ahead of time that I will be cursing (aren’t I thoughtful?) and sometimes ranting (this is internet!) so if that isn’t your bag feel free to stop reading here or flame me with derogatory, self-esteem destroying comments below.

A little about me:

I’m a man (child) in his mid-twenties living in frosty Alberta, Canada in a most excellent two bedroom apartment with my adorable girlfriend whom I love dearly (this is her blog, it’s much better than mine.) and our chubby fuzzball of a cat. As stated above I’m a huge comic nut, I collect and average of 45+ comics a month and I intended to thrust forth upon the internet my thoughts on them. I am also a musician, I play percussion in folk band called Ghost Factory and I play drums very casually with my semi-retired punk band  Conniving Cadavers. Um… ok, what else? Maybe this whole blog thing isn’t my thing, well fuck it, Imma still try!

Hope you enjoy and stay tuned for some posts you may actually give a shit about! Hurray!!
